What is Spring Energy? A Guide to Real-Food Energy Gels

Spring Energy real-food energy gels Bestsellers Pack – Endurance Update

If sugary gels upset your stomach late in a long race, real-food fuel might be worth a try. Spring Energy is one of the nutrition brands we carry at Endurance Update. Here's what Spring is and how to use its gels, snacks and meals.

What is Spring Energy?

Spring Energy was founded in 2014 by Rafal Nazarewicz, PhD, a nutrition scientist and ultrarunner, together with Adam Goleniewski. Spring takes its carbohydrate from foods like basmati rice, fruit, honey and maple syrup, and leaves out maltodextrin, rice syrup and artificial flavors, colors and preservatives.

The Spring Energy lineup

  • Awesome Sauce is a vegan gel with 180 kcal and 28g of carbohydrate, made with apple juice, basmati rice, apple sauce and maple syrup.
  • Canaberry is a lighter strawberry-smoothie gel: 100 kcal and 17g of carbohydrate.
  • Peach Cobbler Gel XL is Spring's high-carb option, with 50g of carbohydrate and 210 kcal per packet.
  • Mango Mint adds 30mg of caffeine, and Speednut is a 250 kcal nuts-and-berries gel with 50mg of caffeine for all-day efforts.
  • Power Snacks are light, 100 kcal options for everyday training, like Acai and Orange. The Lemon Power Snack has 113mg of caffeine.
  • Matcha Berry Endurance Meal is a 310 kcal oat-based pouch for an early-start breakfast or long days.

Not sure where to start?

The Bestsellers Pack bundles a mix of Spring favorites. The Race Pack comes in three sizes: up to 1.5 hours, up to 3 hours, or over 3 hours.

How to use it

Most Spring gels are meant to be taken 2–3 per hour, depending on their size, and the XL 1–2 per hour. Save caffeinated options for the second half of a race, and check allergens: some products contain tree nuts or soy. As with any fuel, test it in training first.
