Fueling for long rides, runs and races doesn't have to be complicated or expensive. That's the whole idea behind Formula 369, one of the nutrition brands we carry at Endurance Update. Here's what Formula 369 is, what's in the lineup, and how to put it to work.
What is Formula 369?
Formula 369 was created by Eric Ellis, a competitive cyclist in Utah with a background in exercise physiology and coaching. He built it for his own training because he didn't want to pay for overpriced high-carb mixes. The core drink mix has just three ingredients: a glucose source (maltodextrin), fructose and salt, in a 1:1 ratio of glucose to fructose. There are no "hype" ingredients, which keeps the cost per serving low.
The Formula 369 lineup
- Formula 369 with Caffeine ($39.99, 45 servings) is the same formula with an extra kick, meant to be mixed with the regular version for key workouts and races, for example 1 caffeinated scoop plus 2 regular scoops per bottle.
- Electrolyte Booster ($29.99) adds sodium, potassium and magnesium for hot days and salty sweaters. Flavors include Salted Watermelon, Salted Lemonade, Salted Black Cherry, Salted Peach Mango and Unflavored.
- Recovery Booster ($49.99) is a vegan 3:1 carb-to-protein recovery mix with 20 grams of complete protein and a blend of six grains, in Cocoa or Vanilla.
- CARB DOPE ($2.25 each) is a simple 45g gel with a 2:1 glucose-to-fructose ratio, for when you'd rather eat your carbs than drink them.
Bottles and carry options
Formula 369 also makes the gear to carry it: the DIY Gel Hard Flask ($7.99, holds 60g of carbs of mix), the slim Marathon Race Bottle ($9.99), the Team Water Bottle in 750ml or 950ml (from $11.99), and a reusable powder container ($2.99) that holds about 3 scoops for a jersey pocket.
How to use it
Each scoop of the drink mix contains 30g of carbohydrate, so you can build bottles at 30, 60, 90 or more grams depending on the session. Start lower in training, work up gradually to train your gut, and use the caffeinated mix and Electrolyte Booster on race day or in the heat.
